Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), also known as TUR prostatectomy, is a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, a common condition that affects many men as they age. TURP is considered the mostly used, standard surgical intervention for relieving the urinary symptoms caused by BPH. In our clinic, we perform mini-TURP operations with thinner endoscopic equipment.
Mini-TUR prostatectomy is a minimally invasive procedure performed using a thinner tool called a resectoscope than standart TURP, which is inserted through the urethra. The resectoscope has a light source, a camera, and a looped wire that can remove excess prostate tissue by cutting or vaporizing it. Whole equipments of mini-TURP are special and miniaturized. The surgery is typically performed under general or spinal anesthesia, and patients are often discharged within a day or two of the procedure.
During mini-TUR prostatectomy, the surgeon removes the obstructive prostate tissue to relieve the compression on the urethra, thereby improving urinary flow. The procedure involves resecting small pieces of the enlarged prostate gland until the passage for urine becomes adequately wide. The removed tissue is then irrigated and flushed out of the bladder.
With the Mini-TUR method, unlike the standard TURP operation, the procedure can be performed without any problems in patients with narrow urethra and small penis size, thanks to the thin equipment used.
Mini-TUR prostatectomy provides several benefits for individuals suffering from BPH. It is a highly effective treatment for relieving the bothersome urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate gland. These symptoms can include frequent urination, weak urine flow, difficulty starting and stopping urination, waking up at night to urinate (nocturia), and a constant sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. By removing the obstructive prostate tissue, mini-TUR prostatectomy restores normal urinary function and quality of life.
Furthermore, mini-TUR prostatectomy is a less invasive alternative to open surgery, which involves making a larger incision in the lower abdomen. The minimally invasive nature of mini-TURP reduces the risk of bleeding, infection, and complications associated with open surgery. Additionally, the recovery time is generally shorter, and the procedure has a lower risk of requiring blood transfusions.
